When you enter Mr Hau, it’s immediately clear that you’ve entered an authentic Chinese, family run restaurant. If you’re not greeted by Mr Hau himself, one of the friendly staff is always on hand to welcome you – and it’s hard not to notice immediately the beautiful authentic décor that shrouds the walls.
If you’ve never visited Mr Hau before you’re in for a treat. The vast menu offers everything you’d expect from an average Chinese restaurant – and then some! Choosing your dishes is half the fun. Wanting a bit of everything is the pain. For a first visit I would certainly recommend a set menu and, if necessary, adding some dishes to it. There’s definitely something for every taste bud in the land!
I would personally recommend any of the following dishes:
Hors D’Ouevres
Crispy Seaweed
Butterfly Prawns
Toasted Prawns with Sesame Seeds
Spring Roll
Soup
Chicken & Chicken Soup
A Feast on Its Own
Aromatic Crispy Duck
Main Meals
Sliced Beef with Spring Onion & Ginger
Deep Fried Shredded Beef with Chilli
Lemon Chicken
Sweet & Sour Chicken
Rice Dishes
Egg Fried Rice
Special Fried Rice
Sweets
Toffee Apple
Toffee Banana
All dishes are served on plate warmers intricately decorated with vegetables carved into flowers and dragons. The service is fantastic, slick and efficient; the staff helpful and cheery and the establishment clean, warm and welcoming; and for the authentic Chinese beverage I would recommend the Chinese Tea; and no Mr Hau dining experience is complete without a fortune cookie to finish.
Prices are a little more expensive, but for the generous servings, the service and experience, that little extra goes a long way. Mr Hau and all his staff greet all new customers as friends and always remember existing customers warmly.
Mr Hau‘s mission is clear, set by his own standards, he aims to:
“… provide our customers with only the finest Peking and Szechuan cuisine, within a relaxed friendly atmosphere, offering unbeatable service. We aim to be the very best restaurant in not only Eastbourne but the whole of the South East of England. We want every customer that enters our restaurant to leave not only having had a fantastic meal, but also a wonderful experience. Only the very best is good enough for our customers”.
From my personal experiences of dining at Mr Hau, this has certainly been achieved.
Mr Hau offers a Gold Card for just £15 per year, for which a 10% discount is offered across all three restaurants and personal invitations to special events before they’re advertised.
Not only is every dining experience flawless, but Mr Hau is keen to celebrate both local and traditional Chinese events, such as Christmas, New Year, St Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year.
Mr Hau‘s Restaurant underwent extensive refurbishment some two or three years ago and now offers a larger dining area downstairs which is bright and warm and continues the same authentic theme.
Going that extra mile, Mr Hau also extends their services to cater for the outside customer for private functions. Able to cater from 4 to 400 guests, he offers his catering expertise to suit any budget; they can either prepare on the premises or have it delivered to your premises.
Mr Hau also supports local and national charities and has raised over £10,000.

Located at the seafront end of Terminus road in the town centre, Mr Haus is as much a part of Eastbourne as the seafront itself! This is the ‘sister’ chinese food place to the eat in restaurant. The food is out of this world. I usually avoid it as it is a little out of my price range, but i went to a friends the other day for a takeaway and she ordered from here – what a treat. The food was beautifully cooked with wonderful flavours and so obviously fresh. Nice big portions and loads of choice on the menu. I couldn’t afford a takeaway from here every week but for a treat, it more than hits the spot.

Always Reliable – Beyond expectations
I have eaten in both Mr Hau’s of Eastbourne and Oriental Express & have used the take away service quite a few times. I am always pleased with the service and the food is second to none. I think the staff are friendly and the service is quick. The food quality is no different in the main restaurant to the fast food place, the difference is the surroundings and service. If you go to Mr Hau‘s, you are waited on by happy and helpful staff who can not do enough for you and the surroundings are quite and nicely decorated, with subdued lighting. The fast food place is as you would expect it to be for a quick turnaround, plastic tables and table cloths and the lighting is bright and vibrant, staff are still friendly, but as I mentioned before, the quality of the food is no different. I would highly recommend either one of these restaurants, depending on your occassion and pocket! Elvis may even be serving you, he is normally in the fast food outlet overseeing and helping, he even does the odd delivery, Very hands on boss!!

Quick and satisfying – Above expectations
My mate Julie has banged on about Mr Hau‘s for years so the last time I visited her in Eastbourne, we went there for our tea. This is the takeway/cafe version of Mr Hau‘s…the restaurant is a couple of doors up. The ‘Express’ is brightly lit and bustling with people. The tables are plastic with fixed seats…so pretty basic. The food, however, is amazing. I ordered bean curd with Chinese mushrooms and noodles and it was some of the best I’ve ever tasted. It was still sizzling when it arrived at the table…straight out of the wok…really fresh. The portions are huge too although being the greedy girl I am I managed to polish it all off without too much trouble. The staff are rushed off their feet but smiley and polite and happy to have your custom whatever you order. If you’re looking for a quick but very tasty meal then Mr Hau is for you. No doubt the restaurant is just as good.

You are never hurried in your meal and the staff come over and ask if everything is alright .You get plenty of food which is always cooked just right and presented well making it very good value |

Great Buffet. – As expected
Unlike some of the other Chinese’s in Eastbourne, Mr Hau do a great buffet. There’s 2 set prices, so you know your budget before you’ve even started and 2 set menus to choose from. There’s absolutely loads of choice and no limit on how much you order. It’s a brilliant way of sampling dishes you’ve never tried, if you don’t like it just order something else! Also, the food is really fresh and cooked to order, which makes it a whole lot nicer. The actual decor is a little old fashioned but who cares when the food is so good!
